Main space: Rosie Hastie – Placeless Place: Studies to define a photograph as a heterotopia

 

Rosie Hastie’s work focuses on theories of photography and how its method defines what it is.

In Michel Foucault’s Of Other Spaces (1967), he makes the analogy that what we see in the mirror is a utopia. He describes heterotopia [definition: the other, otherness of place] as neither here nor there. Once the viewer is aware of something in mirror, it makes it absent from reality.

Why didn’t he consider the photograph? It is merely a captured mirror of reality. The content of a photograph will always be utopian as it is an idealistic snapshot of reality. This exhibition explores how by objectifying the photograph it connects us with the space around it. The space that isn’t the photograph is heterotopia.
