Exhibition Dates: 11 July – 2 August 2014
Opening Night: 6pm Thursday, 10 July
Foyer Space: Laura Purcell (TAS) – Desirous
Desirous is a personal and playful filmic and photographic exploration of the desire to break free from preconceived notions of identity and move beyond a current state of mind. Private spaces are inhabited, physically and emotionally, existing within and beyond the boundary line of place. Idiosyncratic gesture is captured and moments of corporeal release are lived through dance. From direction to self-direction, uncertainty to confidence, a state of empowerment and connection to self and place is desirous. Laura Purcell practices across the disciplines of performance, dance, puppetry and visual art. She completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) in 2010, focusing on contemporary sculpture complimenting her Bachelor of Performing Arts (Theatre).
‘My artistic practice activates spaces, animates the inanimate and highlights artistic processes. I have endeavoured to engage and entertain audiences in a variety of sites and situations which live in and beyond traditional performance spaces and explore my ideas through a broad range of mediums.’
This project is part of Salamanca Arts Centre’s HyPe program and has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body, Hobart City Council, and Arts Tasmania.
